Fresh Pico de Gallo Salsa

Fresh Pico de Gallo Salsa

Fresh, vibrant, juicy, and packed with flavor, this classic Pico de Gallo Salsa is the perfect homemade topping for tacos, nachos, grilled meats, burrito bowls, quesadillas, or simply scooping up with crispy tortilla chips. Made with fresh tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, and lime juice, it comes together in minutes and tastes so much better than store-bought salsa!

 Ingredients

  • 5–6 ripe Roma tomatoes, finely diced
  • 1 small white or red onion, finely diced
  • 1–2 fresh jalapeños, finely chopped
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • Juice of 1–2 fresh limes
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin, optional
  • ½ avocado, diced, optional
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, optional

 Instructions

1. Prepare the tomatoes
Wash the tomatoes thoroughly and remove the stems. Dice them into small, even pieces. If your tomatoes are especially juicy, remove some of the seeds and excess liquid to prevent the salsa from becoming watery.

2. Chop the vegetables
Finely dice the onion and jalapeño. For a milder Pico de Gallo, remove the jalapeño seeds and membranes. For extra heat, leave some or all of them in.

3. Add the fresh herbs
Chop the cilantro finely and mince the garlic. Add both to a large mixing bowl along with the tomatoes, onion, and jalapeño.

4. Season the salsa
Pour in the fresh lime juice and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Add cumin if you enjoy a slightly deeper, savory flavor.

5. Mix gently
Toss everything together gently until the ingredients are evenly combined. If using avocado, fold it in carefully at the end so it doesn’t become mashed.

6. Let the flavors develop
For the best flavor, cover the bowl and refrigerate for 15–30 minutes before serving. This gives the lime juice, onion, cilantro, and jalapeño time to blend together.

Tips for the Best Pico de Gallo

  • Use ripe, firm tomatoes for the freshest flavor and best texture.
  • Fresh lime juice makes a big difference compared with bottled lime juice.
  • Adjust the jalapeño according to your preferred spice level.
  • Add salt gradually and taste before serving.
  • For a fruitier twist, add diced mango or pineapple.
